France Also Spies on All Calls and Emails, Report Says

The US is not the only country that can spy on its citizens. Much to no one's surprise, Le Monde is uncovering that France's external spy agency (DGSE) too has been looking into the phone calls, emails and online activity of the country's own citizens.

In a scheme similar to the NSA's, the DGSE is keeping track of all phone calls inside France as well as to and from other countries to get an idea of who is talking to whom. Like the NSA, it does not record the actual calls or the content of the emails, it just uses the metadata.

But, like many have explained after the NSA leak, metadata is more than enough for spies to get a pretty good idea of what anyone is doing, who they are talking to, where they are going and so on.

Six other local spy agencies were involved in the program. This, Le Monde says (in French), explains why France has stayed mostly quiet in regard to the US spying, even as the rest of Europe has been fairly critical, even if no one actually did anything.
