Sprint Galaxy S III Receiving New Security Update

While most US-based carriers have yet to launch the Samsung Galaxy S III, Sprint has already released two software updates for the Android smartphone.

Samsung’s Android flagship device has been introduced at Sprint in early July and got a few security updates, which are meant to make the smartphone safer for end users.

Software version L710VPLG2 for Sprint Galaxy S III is now available for download OTA (over the air). According to the official changelog, this will only bring Google security updates, which have yet to be detailed.

Keep in mind that the update is pushed to devices in stages and that the device selection is random. Make sure the phone’s battery is at least 50% charged before starting the update. It will take around 10 minutes to download it and probably another 10 to install it.

No More Stress Watching Movies on Your iPad Thanks to tablift

Startup nbryte has announced an iPad accessory via Kickstarter.com to eliminate arm fatigue for people using their tablets for long video sessions.

A recent Nielson survey has found that some of the heaviest use of tablet devices takes place while lying in bed. However, many people complain about the weight of the iPad, when they want to watch a full-length movie.

The tablift is a new accessory introduced by startup nbryte which allows for hands-free iPad-viewing on any uneven surface. This includes the bed and the couch. Even though it looks like the rollcage of a furious 4x4, the developers promise that their accessory will make watching a movie on the iPad more akin to watching a movie on a conventional TV.

Launched on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, the tablift can be pre-ordered immediately. The campaign ends Thursday, July 12.

OS X Mountain Lion Wont Download Unless Your Mac Looks Supported

Customers attempting to download OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion when it’s released this month will have their systems screened by the Mac App Store before Apple charges any credit cards, according to a new report.

512 Pixels reports that “some people have had the App Store balk at downloading 10.8 betas on machines that don’t meet requirements,” with the site adding that Apple would do well to keep this restriction on board for the final build.

Indeed, downloading a $20 / €16 OS simply to find out that it doesn’t work on your computer should be frustrating, to say the least. A few Lion purchasers found this out the hard way.

For whoever’s interested, Mountain Lion requires an Intel-based Mac running OS X 10.6.8 or later, 2GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage.

According to Apple’s tech specs page for OS X Mountain Lion, supported systems include: iMac (Mid 2007 or newer); MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer); MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer); Xserve (Early 2009); MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer); Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer); and Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer).

There will also be some feature-specific requirements for users looking to leverage the full functionality of the new cat, though Apple will not impose these on installation.

For example, AirDrop supports only some computer models, including: MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer); MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer); MacBook (Late 2008 or newer); iMac (Early 2009 or newer); Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer); and Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010).

And the new PowerNap feature only supports MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer) and the brand new MacBook Pro with Retina display.

Interest in Pre-Release Versions Lower for Windows 8 than for Windows 7

Windows 8, the next-generation operating system from Microsoft, is currently available in a pre-release flavor for people all around the world to take it for a spin for free.

This is the same approach that Microsoft used for Windows 7, allowing users to get a taste of the product before it even reached shelves, so as to stir their interest.

However, it appears that things did not work as planned for Windows 8, and that interest in the pre-release flavors of the operating system was lower than for Windows 7.

Teacher Uses Apple TV for Lessons, Deems it Fantastic Solution

Primary school teacher Simon Haughton decided to make his classes more interesting by employing an Apple TV to project large images and switch between slides from afar. He discovered it was "fantastic" for the job.

After using Apple’s set-top box in just one class, Haughton decided to make a blog entry and let everyone know that, “Using Apple TV in a lesson is FANTASIC!”

“Having read about it online I sort of knew what to expect but it was only when I actually tried it out in a lesson did I realise the huge impact that it has on teaching and learning,” he explains.

One of the key benefits, Haughton notes, is the ability to stand anywhere in the room to showcase something – “you aren't confined to just standing next to the projected display,” he writes.

Thanks to AirPlay integration, “the fact that you can pass an iPad to a child to write on makes it much more flexible,” in Haughton’s opinion, “and easier too for the shorter children who can't always reach the top of the board.” Talk about a thoughtful teacher, eh?

The third and last key benefit outlined by Haughton in his post, teachers can mirror any child's iPad display “to share it as an example of 'what a good one looks like' to the rest of the class.”

In other words, the class no longer requires a visualiser, thanks to the Apple-based solutions.

&l dquo; When I used it in Year 4 on Friday, the children were that impressed by the whole setup that they even asked me to mirror the iPad screen of one of the more confident children for a short while so that they could watch the process they did to create such super work,” Haughton said.

The teacher admits that he does have one small problem, and that is finding a suitable app for presenting lessons on. Maybe the next iOS will open the door to that.

Review of the WeekReview of the Week: LIMBO Review

· Limbo is not a nice place to be, but for some unbeknown reason it's a great place for game developers. Who would have thought that the adventures of a little boy in a place that could very well be the dreaded Limbo, will make a great game and something to be remembered.

Review image
LIMBO game running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Limbo is built with an amazing physics engine and almost all of the puzzles and conundrums are making use of it. Moreover, the deaths of the main character are one of the most imaginative I’ve ever seen, with the exception of Heart of Darkness.

Download Linux Kernel 3.5 Release Candidate 6

Linus Torvalds announced yesterday, July 7th, that the sixth Release Candidate of the upcoming Linux 3.5 kernel is now available for download and testing.

Linux kernel 3.5 RC6 brings some Btrfs improvements, ARM updates, as well as various networking and driver changes.

That said, it's also summer (our Australian co-developers may disagree, but they are in the minority), and with that I also wanted to talk about the next merge window. Because I suspect that especially a lot of the European developers have either taken off for vacation or are getting ready to do so.

August tends to be off-season for a lot of people. I'm hoping summer plans not a huge part of the slowing down of the rc patches, but I do suspect that the next merge window will a lmost inevitably be completely overshadowed for some developers by their vacation.” - said Linus Torvalds in the email announcement.
