First Person Shooters Improve Short Term Memory Study

Doctor Lorenza Colzato of the Leiden University in The Netherlands says that playing first person shooters can improve short term memory capacity for gamers and increase their ability to register important information quickly.

The research has seen two groups, one made up of gamers and another of people who do not share the hobby, complete tasks that taxed their memory.

The full study from Doctor Lorenza Colzato has been published in the most recent issue of the journal Psychological Research.

The bottom line is that first person shooters “require players to develop a flexible mindset to rapidly react and monitor fast moving visual and auditory stimuli.”

It’s unclear whether playing video games might also have an effect on the long term memory of players.

Shooters have also been previously linked with improvements in reaction time and even eye hand coordination.

Indie Developer Comments on Piracy and Its Effects via Torrent Release

Green Heart Games is an indie developer that chose to use its most recent release, Game Dev Tycoon, to comment on the effects of piracy and try to educate those who get games via illegal means.

When the new title was launched the team also seeded a torrent which included the same overall experience with one little twist: a message that shows how a small developer can be impacted by pirates in negative ways, driving the company out of business.

The entire experience of the team is detailed in a blog post that includes some pretty interesting reactions from those who pirated the game.

The team at Green Heart Games states, "Over 93.6% of players stole the game. We know this because our game contains some code to send anonymous-usage data to our server. Nothing unusual or harmful."

Nintendo Can Make Customers Notice Wii U Through Great Games, Analysts Say

Nintendo's Wii U marketing effort has been a disaster, according to games industry analysts, but the Japanese company can turn things around by accurately showing off the new home console and by releasing plenty of new games for it.

Nintendo released the Wii U back in November but sales haven't been that impressive, largely because not a lot of games appeared for it and due to Nintendo's poor marketing efforts.

The company itself admitted its lackluster promotional campaigns and has pledged to fix things going forward.

Analyst David Cole of DFC Intelligence believes Nintendo made some huge mistakes with the Wii U but emphasized that, because of its poor job, it can start again from scratch.

"Nintendo of America's performance the past couple years has been a disaster on almost every level. Much of this was due to lack of execution on basic stuff like product marketing," Cole told GamesIndustry.

"They forgot Marketing 101 for the Wii U and no product could have done well without basic marketing support. Clearly a change in execution was long overdue. The damage done is enormous but there is the possibility of a turnaround. The fact is that the general public is not really aware the Wii U even exists so it is an opportunity to almost start from scratch."

Games will be an important part of the Wii U's resurrection, at least according to Asif A. Khan, the CFO of Virtue LLC.

"I believe that 3DS offers a perfect template for how Wii U could succeed in the future," he said. "Nintendo had an equally poor 3DS launch lineup as we have seen with the Wii U. One thing that holds true for most systems they have made, software moves the hardware. What has given life to the 3DS in recent months is the introduction of high quality first party titles and I believe we will see the same process play out for the Wii U."

Nintendo has already pledged to launch more titles for the Wii U in order to boost sales.

Marriage Troubles for Clint Eastwood: Star Steps Out Without Wedding Ring

Dina Eastwood, reality star and wife of Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood, checked herself into rehab for anxiety and depression last week. The other day, Clint stepped out without his wedding ring, fueling rumors that their marriage is on the rocks.

These reports have been picking up speed since Dina’s admission to the rehabilitation center but, so far, no one from camp Eastwood has bothered to deny or confirm them.

The Daily Mail notes that Clint and Dina have not been photographed together since November 2011, which could also be an indication that their marriage is in trouble.

Another is his ring-less finger, as displayed over the weekend.

“Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood appeared at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City with his wedding ring noticeably absent,” the Mail writes. It also has photos to back up the story.

“The 82-year-old actor and director participated in a film festival event on Saturday without the band and also was seen walking the streets ringless,” adds the same media outlet.

TMZ confirms that Clint and Dina have hit a rough patch, adding that it was problems within their relationship that sent her over the edge and determined her to seek professional help.

“Sources close to the couple tell TMZ, Clint and Dina – who've been married since 1996 – have been having serious marital issues for months... and things got so bad, Dina had divorce on her mind,” TMZ writes.

It can’t offer more details on the nature of the problems, but it claims to know for a fact that Dina is the one asking for a way out with a divorce. Clint, on the other hand, believes the marriage is still “salvageable.”

“We're also told the rehab stint was Dina's choice... and she plans to stay at the exclusive Arizona facility for a few months,” the same media outlet says.

The 39 Steps, a revolutionary type of game that tries to combine literature, gaming and film into one experience, will launch on Steam for Linux.

The game has been created in Unity, which means that the Linux support is almost a given, even if no official announcements have been made.

The information about the Linux version is taken from the CDR database and by no means is it completely certain. The CDR Database is a record of data that describes every Steam game and subscription provided by Valve for the Steam service.

Conjoined Twins Separated in Groundbreaking Surgery

Earlier this week, surgeons at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU in Virginia performed a 14-hour long surgery and succeeded in separating a pair of conjoined twin girls.

6-month-old A'zhari and A'zhiah Jones currently find themselves in stable condition, and doctors say that they are making progress towards recovery.

Apparently, these two girls were joined in their middle section, at the abdomen. More precisely, they shared both the liver and the pericardium (i.e. the fluid filled sac surrounding the heart and major blood vessels).

The doctors first operated on A'zhari and A'zhiah back in October 2012. At that time, they settled for dividing their liver and then closed back their abdominal cavity.

Huffington Post quotes Dr. David Lanning, who wished to stress the fact that “Complete separation at that time would almost assuredly have resulted in their deaths as A’zhari was in renal failure and A’zhiah had severe cardiac hypertrophy. A phased surgery was the optimal plan.”

The final part of this complex two-phased procedure took place this past Monday, when doctors succeeded in completely separating the two girls.

Prior to their performing this second surgery, the doctors made sure that they had enough excess skin to close up the cuts and reconstruct the girls' bodies by placing tissue expanders in their abdomens.

The expanders were inserted this past February, the same source informs us.

“The plastic surgery team really worked to get closure of the chest and the abdomen. Even though they are closed now, we do plan to take A’zhari back after the swelling is gone down a little bit to advance some of the chest muscle flaps a bit more to provide a little bit better coverage of her heart,” Dr. David Lanning further detailed on the outcomes of this procedure.

A'zhari and A'zhiah Jones of Franklin, Virginia, were born October 10, 2012. At birth, their combined weight was one of 10 pounds (roughly 4.5 kilograms).

Camelot Unchained Is Risk-Driven, Learns from Shadowbane and Guild Wars 2

Mark Jacobs, the current leader of City State Entertainment, says that he looked at other MMOs, including the modern Guild Wars 2, when creating the new Camelot Unchained, in order to make sure that his title was unique on the market.

He tells VG247 that he learned that only a niche experience can get a solid group of fans and use a subscription model.

Jacobs states, “Take some risks, that’s the whole point of doing it via Kickstarter and not going with a publisher who would be most likely – as you know – anti-risk.”

Camelot Unchained is designed to focus on Realm versus Realm battles, with players working together in order to control territory in battles that can reach 1,000 gamers entering combat at the same time.

The game will also not feature any sort of item drops, and all classes will be unique.

Steve Ballmer Confirms He Wants NBA Back in Seattle

Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer has finally confirmed he’s one of the investors trying to bring NBA back to Seattle, explaining that buying the Sacramento Kings and moving them to the city is a huge opportunity.

Ballmer was quoted as saying by CBC Sports that the A PLUS youth program held Seattle is the living proof that the city is really interested in sports in general, and basketball in particular.

"Today is about A PLUS. I will say that we've got our fingers crossed. Chris Hansen has worked really, really hard, really intelligently. Seattle has got a great bid. We've got a great arena plan. I think we've got the better arena plan. We've got a good offer, it's been accepted by current owners. We've got a great market. It seems like there will never be a better opportunity. But it will be up to the NBA owners,” he said.

FIFA 14 Will Be Launched on September 24 in North America

FIFA 14 has just been officially announced by the development team at EA Sports, but there are already rumors that it will be launched on September 24 of this year and that a Vita version of the game is in the works.

The date comes from a listing on Amazon, which has since been modified, and it makes sense given that the FIFA series had launch dates of September 25 in 2012 and September 27 in 2011.

The Vita listing is also credible given that EA Sports has suggested that it will reveal additional formats for FIFA 14 in the coming months, after confirming it only for the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

The main elements of the new game in the series are Pure Shot and Protect the Ball, which are designed to increase the level of spectacle.

A new multiplayer mode is also rumored.

Dreamfall Chapters Succeeded on Kickstarter Because of Team Work, Says Developer

Ragnar Tornquist, the leader of the team at Red Thread that is currently working on Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey, says that his project was planned with Kickstarter in mind from the get to and the main reason for its success is the hard work of the team.

He tells Gamasutra during the Digital Dragons festival in Poland that, “It really is a full-time job, and it's a combination of pitching a product to a publisher, and selling a product to your customers.”

In order to motivate his team Tornquist approached the entire process like a game but he was initially pessimistic the evolution of Dreamfall Chapters.

The developer also emphasizes that Kickstarter brings teams closer to the fan base and explored how a big injection of choice will make The Longest Journey an experience that the community will love.

The game is expected to arrive in November of next year.

WD Shares Financial Results Too

As odd as it sounds, some corporations have only recently finished their fiscal years, which often don't coincide with calendar years. First we have looked at Logitech and now we have Western Digital.

Western Digital's fiscal year 2013 ended on March 29, which means that the past month was spent by its financial office on tallying shipments and income.

One thing we've noticed, and which Western Digital itself remarks in its press release, is that the acquisition of Hitachi is paying dividends.

Sales of HGST products were very strong, and with them added to WD's own supply chain, it all made for some very strong figures.

Some decline in demand did happen in some areas, particularly branded consumer products, but everything still turned out positive.

"Strong execution by our HGST and WD subsidiaries drove outstanding results in the March quarter as we continue to capitalize on the secular growth of digital data," said Steve Milligan, president and chief executive officer.

"Overall industry demand was in line with our expectations. In our business, we saw strength in enterprise, stable performance in client and consumer electronics, and some anticipated seasonal softness in Branded Products."

For those who want the numbers, the total HDD shipments were of 60.2 million during the quarter finished on March 29.

It led to net income of $391 million / €299 million and revenue of $3.8 billion / €2.9 billion.

Overall, it was a progress from the $3 billion / €2.3 billion reported during the same period of the previous year.

Moving forward, WD will have to do its best to profit from its most recent investments, like the Skyera SSD deal. It also has a new executive for Strategy and Corporate Development, so we'll have to see how that goes, and how Seagate and Toshiba react.

Microsoft Was a Top Donor to Barack Obamas January Inauguration [Bloomberg]

Tech giant Microsoft is one of the companies that donated the biggest amount of money to President Barack Obama’s re-election committee, as the software maker contributed $2.1 million (€1.6 billion) to support the January inauguration.

According to a report by Bloomberg citing Federal Election Commission filings, Microsoft is the second top donor, as AT&T contributed $4.6 million (€3.5 million).

In case you’re wondering, more than $814,000 (€625,000) was donated by Microsoft’s employees, with the re-election committee raising a record $44 million (€33 million). Other top donors include Boeing and Chevron, each with $1 million (€767,000) granted for the Obama campaign.

Microsoft hasn’t released a public statement on this, but this isn’t surprising at all, especially because the company had previously announced that the staff taking care of President’s Obama campaign had used Lync for communication and collaboration across the United States.

Eva Longoria Is Dating Ready for Love Bachelor Ernesto Arguello

Eva Longoria’s new reality show, “Ready for Love,” was canceled by NBC for disappointing ratings (the final episode airs today), but word online is that she’s not exactly heartbroken over it because of certain happy developments in her personal life.

For a couple of days now, there’s been a lot of speculation about how Eva is dating one of the bachelors on the show, Ernesto Arguello.

Fans must already know that Eva doesn’t appear on “Ready for Love,” she’s producing it.

Talk about a possible romance first started making the rounds after the two were photographed together, trying to avoid the paparazzi, as TMZ points out.

On her Twitter feed, Eva denies any romantic involvement.

“WHAT?! AGAIN? Sorry guys, still not dating @ernestoarguello Who are these ‘sources’??” she writes.

TMZ claims that, while they might not be dating (yet), they’re definitely living together because Ernesto, and other cast members, live with Eva while they’re in Los Angeles.

The former “Desperate Housewives” star shoots down this report too.

“Oh Lord! Now I have 2 new roommates @pwts_tim and @ernestoarguello?? Why not just say @Ben_Patton too? #DumbTabloids,” she says on social media.

“Eva is not dating Ernesto. She is friends with all of the guys and matchmakers from the show, but nothing further,” Longoria’s publicist says in a statement to E! News.

However, this e-zine too claims that Ernesto spent Sunday night at Eva’s house, after they had a romantic dinner and drove around town in her car so this explains why no one is really buying into Eva and her publicist’s denials.

There is also the possibility that this is just a PR stunt meant to bring more attention to the already-canceled show, celebrity pundits say.

The fact that Eva has been busily denying the romance rumors while also urging her Twitter followers to tune in for the show to see who is really dating who, and to “get those ratings up” could also be seen as proof of that.

Company of Heroes Gets New Steam Version with Working Multiplayer on May 7

Relic Entertainment has confirmed that it's going to release a new Steam version of Company of Heroes 1, plus its expansions, which feature a multiplayer mode tied to the Steamworks infrastructure, instead of the old Quazal one.

Company of Heroes 2 is set to appear later this year but, until then, many fans are still playing online the first game in the series and its different expansions.

Sadly, the Quazal servers that host the multiplayer will soon be taken offline, on May 7, so Relic has decided to release a new version of Company of Heroes, whose online mode is based on the Steamworks suite.

Some owners of the game have already received access to the "Company of Heroes (New Steam Version)" package and are advised to download it in order to ensure a smooth transition after the Quazal servers are taken offline.

Check out more details about the move on the CoH forums.

TV Anchor A.J. Clemente Fired After On-Air Profanities

A.J. Clemente’s first-ever live broadcast with KFYRTV, an NBC affiliate in Burbank, also turned out to be his last after his first seconds on air saw him use profanity, unaware that the camera was on him.

I also reported on the incident yesterday, with a video of the whole thing being available here. However, *please note that discretion is recommended before viewing it because it contains language that might offend.

At the time the vid was going viral, Clemente had already apologized on Twitter. Also on Twitter, #KeepAJ was trending, Us Weekly reports.

Sadly, it wasn’t enough to help him keep his job.

“Unfortunately, KFYRTV has decided to let me go. Thank you to them and everyone in ND for the opportunity and everyone for the support,” Clemente tweets, as cited by the aforementioned publication.

“Rookie mistake. I'm a free agent. Can't help but laugh at myself and stay positive. Wish I didn't trip over my ‘freaking shoes’ out of the gate,” he adds.

The new device is said to feature a 7-inch touchscreen display on the front, and to sport the model number V72A, while packing pretty decent hardware specifications inside.

Although no official confirmation on the tablet PC’s existence has emerged so far, recent reports suggest that it should be officially unveiled in the not too distant future.

The slate should be powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8225 processor, paired with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory, as well as a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space.

It is also said to be packing an Adreno 203 GPU, along with a 2-megapixel photo snapper on the back, and a VGA camera on the front, for making video calls.

The specs list of this device also shows a 1024 x 600 pixels resolution for the 7-inch LCD screen, 3G / HSPA connectivity, Wi-Fi n, Bluetooth, micro USB, and HDMI port, and a 4000 mAh battery.

The ZTE V72A is also said to measure 193 x 127 x 11.3 mm and to weigh 418 grams. It should arrive on the market with the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean platform loaded on top right from the beginning, rumor has it.

Overall, the slate should prove a rather decent product when made available for purchase, though it still remains to be seen when exactly that will happen and whether the specs mentioned above, available courtesy of techblog.gr, will make it in the device or not.

In the meantime, you can have a look at the photo allegedly showing the upcoming tablet PC, which was published on the same news site.

Gwyneth Paltrow Hates the Way the British Say Pasta

Gwyneth Paltrow is now promoting her second cookbook, “It’s All Good: Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel Great” and, in a new interview with The Telegraph, she talks about her late father, her philosophy in life, and how she doesn’t want her 2 kids saying “pasta” like the British do.

Fans must know that Gwyneth and husband Chris Martin have been living in the UK for years but, the actress reveals, she simply can’t stand how they say “pasta” there.

“I've lived in England for 10 years and the accent is the most beautiful in the world, except for how you pronounce pasta as pass-ta instead of pah-sta,” she says.

“I'm sort of joking when I say this but I really don't want my children speaking that way,” Paltrow adds.

As you can imagine, this exact quote is now being circulated on celebrity blogs and on social media as yet another example of Gwyneth’s unbearable pretentiousness, though, in all fairness, perhaps she was just being honest.

In the same interview, Gwyneth talks about one particular meeting with Leonardo DiCaprio and how he managed to get her off red meat, how she hates doing scenes in movies with food, how she still gets very emotional when she cooks her dad’s favorite foods, and her life before becoming one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood.

“I hung out with Leonardo DiCaprio when I moved to New York. He was vegetarian and he'd talk about how dirty meat is and how bad factory farming is. I haven't eaten red meat in 20 years and although Leo's not totally responsible he definitely planted a seed,” Paltrow says.

She turned macrobiotic in 1999, when her father was diagnosed with cancer, she explains, adding that she thought her diet could help her “heal him by proxy.”

The full interview is available here.

He tells Eurogamer that, "Today we are seeing a crisis. We are seeing a market that is in decline… there is a certain creative crisis that is, in part, the reason why some gamers are playing less."

The developer believes that publishers need to take more disks when it comes to the projects they back because this is the only way to move away from core sequels and drive innovation forward.

Beyond: Two Souls is an emotion driven project that will be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 3 later during the year.

Molyneux' Curiosity Adds Re-Grow Cubes Option

Peter Molyneux announces that it is adding a new set of options to its Curiosity title, allowing players to spend real world money in order to add layers of cubes to the game and make it harder to reach its center.

Various amounts of new cubes will come with bigger price tags and the same option can also be used to destroy the same number of layers.

Molyneux tells Eurogamer that, "Curiosity may very well rapidly degrade to reveal its innermost secret or maybe the effects of automatically removing cubelets will be neutralised by players keen to keep Curiosity going."

It seems that 22 Cans has plans to take the option out when just two layers remain before the middle of the Curiosity cube is reached.

So far most gamers have used the new paid option to dig deeper in the game.

Baby Squirrels with Stressed Moms Grow Faster than Others

One recent study shows how, when it comes to squirrels, being a stressed-out mom during pregnancy does nothing to harm the baby.

Quite the contrary: it encourages it to grow faster once it is born, despite its getting the same amount of food that baby squirrels born to calm mothers do.

The researchers who studied this phenomenon believe that the cortisol levels (i.e. a stress hormone) some mother squirrels become exposed to during pregnancy force the newborn into growing faster so as to better cope with the stressful living conditions its mom is already too familiar with.

In other words, it all boils down to adaptation.

“What that suggests is that they're first able to predict what sort of environment their offspring will encounter… and they're preparing them for what their offspring are going to face,” study lead author Ben Dantzer reportedly said.

Unfortunately, this rule does not apply to humans, which is why women would do best to keep calm all throughout pregnancy.

Google Chrome 26 - Review

From square one, Google built Chrome browser around strong concepts that would ensure the product’s success among all types of users. They designed it to be simple, more stable and faster than what competition had to offer and secure.

Although in the eyes of the regular user Chrome does not seem to have changed much over time, its functionality and list of features have expanded greatly, some of them even laying the foundation for the future development of the web.

As soon as started, the browser prompts you to log in with your Google account, which is the first step to take advantage of benefits baked into the browser as well as from other Google services such as Search, Gmail, Drive or the Web Store, by signing you in automatically and saving your settings.

This is not mandatory but proves to be an extremely useful move in the long run because it enables synchronization of data (apps, bookmarks, passwords, Omnibox history, settings, themes, opened tabs, autofill data) to your account.

However, this not only ensures that browser information is stored online and you can recover it when re-installing Chrome but also allows its synchronization across multiple devices and platforms. Thus, you benefit from the same browsing experience seamlessly, regardless of the device used.

The multifunctional address bar (called Omnibox) can be used for more than navigating to a web address and initiating a search. By typing in this field the Omnibox drop-down menu lists potential results from stored bookmarks, installed web apps or browsing history.

All this, combined with Google’s prediction service and Instant feature lead to a shorter amount of time spent to reach what you’re looking for.

Review image Review image Review image Review image

The configuration panel for Google Chrome may appear quite simple but this is only because by default only the options most likely to be changed by the user are shown. The list is short and includes defining the pages that load at startup, changing the default search engine or adding new, custom ones or select the data that should by synced.

Chrome supports multiple users, each with their own settings. Adding a new one (complete with a shortcut on the desktop) can also be done from the initial list of configuration options.

Switching between profiles is done from the top left corner of the browser’s main application window and launches a new browser window. Choosing to delete a profile leads to erasing all data associated with it.

The Settings panel is also the place to access all the extensions installed in Chrome as well as the entire browsing history.

However, a more important aspect for this area is the advanced section, which is jam-packed with options. The best part is that you do not have to remember the location for any of them because the baked-in search bar can assist in finding them in a jiffy.

Even if you type the query partially you will still get highlights with the matches. Furthermore, if the result is in a subsection the hints are prominent and indicate that one or more matches are available in a sub-menu.

The new tab page used to be a dull section in most of the browsers. In Chrome, more than in other browsers, this space is heavily exploited and turned into an access gate for important options.

It is actually a double-paged section that makes available the most visited eight pages, the web apps installed in the browser, the last ten closed pages and the tabs opened on other devices (here’s where sync feature comes in really handy).

The Task Manager utility has been available from day one in Chrome and continues to be a significant feature in the application. It delivers statistics about the resource usage for every tab, web app, extension or plug-in running in the browser, thanks to its multi-process architecture.

Details include RAM, CPU and network usage as well as frames per second, where applicable. For an in-depth view of the resource usage statistics you can access the “Stats for nerds” page, which includes values for GPU stress and memory consumption broken into private and shared.

Review image Review image Review image Review image

Moreover, this page also provides information about the total memory used by any other running web browser.

Google Chrome sports a hidden section (type “chrome://flags/” in Omnibox) filled with experimental features intended for more advanced users. It’s a long list of experiments that keeps on growing and may increase the functionality of the browser or break it.

The developer offers no guarantees about the effects any of them might have on the browser and warns that they may delete data or compromise your security and privacy. As such, treading with care in this area is highly advisable.

As far browsing speed is concerned, the current version of Chrome maintains the top position compared to Mozilla Firefox, both in Kraken and Octane benchmark tests. The difference is not highly significant, though.

Testing with Google’s Octane JavaScript benchmark (higher is better) resulted in an average of 5993.3 for Chrome 26, while Firefox 20 recorded a 4695.3 score.

In Mozilla’s Kraken benchmark (lower is better) the difference between the two browsers was even thinner, as Google’s product scored 5993.3ms while Firefox averaged 5666.4ms.

Security wise, Google Chrome does not fall short of options, either. In this regard, Catalin Cosoi, Chief Security Strategist at Bitdefender, told us that “Google Chrome offers unique sandboxing functions and restrictions, and it also updates itself in the background for a better protection.”

Turning the level up a notch can be done manually from the application. “For instance, a user can disable JavaScript (which is sometimes used by malware writers) and then the user can opt-in [Click to play option] when he wants to execute JavaScript code or not.” Cosoi also said.

By default, synced data is protected with your Google account password. “If that gets compromised, your other passwords also get compromised. However, you can set a custom sync password.” Cosoi added.

Another aspect pointed out by Avira’s Security Product Manager Sorin Mustaca is Google’s effort to keep their browser safe. “Especially when we are talking about the Chrome browser, we have the already famous hacking sessions, which Google organizes to find vulnerabilities in the browser. This shows how important the security is for Google.” Mustaca said.

“Google also invests a lot in the visible part of the security. The Safe Browsing functions in the browser prevent users to visit malicious websites.

If two years ago, when comparing Google with Firefox, Safari and IE, Google was not at the top, the situation has changed a lot today.”, he added, referring to the browser’s improved malicious file filtering abilities thanks to Google’s investment in Safe Browsing feature.

“When compared with Firefox and Safari, Google is better at detecting malicious software because it is using some private information regarding file reputation.

With the acquisition of Virus Total in 2012, Google has shown how interested is in improving this security feature in the browser. Expect Google to become better and better here on the medium-long term.”, Avira’s Security Product Manager concluded.

Google Chrome has come a long way from the old days it had a shiny icon, when we first reviewed it. From the underdog few believed in at the beginning it became the head of the browser pack, according to StatCounter; and it continues to expand its market share.

Starting this version Google integrates a new spell-check feature that supports homonym, grammar and context-sensitive corrections. It does lack a few options, though, which are available in other browsers (tab grouping, tab listing), but overall it offers a great browsing experience.

Review image Review image Review image Review image

The Good

Silent updates mechanism ensures that you have the latest version without lifting a finger. It is highly versatile in terms of customization, features and options, for both beginners and more experienced users.

Sync feature allows you to benefit from the same browsing on multiple devices. It offers excellent security.

The Bad

Some of the options useful for the average user are not as visible as they should. When heavily loaded with tabs (40+) it may freeze from time to time for a few seconds. It lacks the ability to group tabs.

The Truth

What makes Google Chrome a great choice are not only the options users take for granted, such as Omnibox’s multiple functionality, tab pinning feature, holding the “back button” to view previously visited pages or the “paste and search/go” option; its simplicity, fast browsing speed, customization settings and increased support for web standards weigh in heavy, too.

13 Dead as Amazon Boat Sinks, Officials Look for Survivors

A boat carrying over 60 passengers has sunk in Brazil on Friday, April 19, leaving at least 13 people dead and several others missing.

K Pop Starz reports that the vessel capsized after being drawn by strong currents near the mouth of the Amazon river.

According to Military Police Sargent Orivaldo Santos, the boat had a capacity of 25 and was massively overcrowded.

The Independent adds that 46 people on board have been accounted for, while rescuers search for the missing passengers.

The captain of the Leao do Norte has not given out information on the exact number of people on board, claiming that a head count has not been performed upon them boarding the vessel.

Santos notes that a rescue operation is still in place, but first responders do not know how many people they are searching for.

The boat rolled over as rapid currents on a tributary of the Amazon dragged it for two km (miles). It sank off the Marajo Island in the early morning, during a trip that was supposed to last for 10 hours.

The passengers were locals headed for Belem, in the jungle state of Para in northern Brazil. Para port authority rep, Lieutenant Marco Antonio Costa mentions that they are still investigating the cause of the incident.

Locals most likely had no other means of transportation from Marajo Island to the city of Para. Some of them intended to buy supplies while others sold fish and vegetables at the market there. There is no information on whether or not they were carrying the product with them.

Wikipedia informs that the city of Belem lies on the Amazon river mouth, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon region. It is a center for trade in the area and has developed as a port city.

Apple Again Blocks Java in OS X to Protect Users from Security Threats

Just days after releasing new Java updates to the public, Apple has issued a memo on its Support site acknowledging that the company had been forced to block Java in OS X yet again because of security concerns.

The memo on Apple’s Support area states, “To help protect users from a recent vulnerability, Apple has updated the web plug-in-blocking mechanism to disable older versions of the web plug-in: Java.”

Apple also tells customers what they can do to help limit exposure to potential Java web app vulnerabilities, such as “enable Java in your web browser only when you need to run a Java web app.”

Users can also confine their most used web browser only to the websites that need the Java web app, with Apple instructing customers not to open any other sites while the plug-in is enabled.

“When you are done, disable the Java web plug-in,” reads Apple’s final piece of advice.

To disable the Java web plug-in in Safari, users can follow these simple steps, according to the Cupertino giant.

1. In Safari, choose Safari > Preferences or press Command-comma (⌘-,)
2. Click "Security".
3. Uncheck (deselect) "Enable Java".
4. Close the Safari preferences window.

When you need to re-enable Java in Safari, simply follow the same instructions again and check the “Enable Java” box.

Earlier this week, Apple rolled out new Java updates for OS X users highlighting dozens of vulnerabilities patched recently by Oracle.

As it is always the case with the Java platform, the next day new bugs had already been found.

Apple uses the Xprotect mechanism to automatically send instructions to Internet-connected OS X computers to block Java when such vulnerabilities are found.

Oracle will now have to code up yet another new batch of Java updates for OS X users.

FIFA 14 Challenges Players to Emulate Barcelona with Protect the Ball

FIFA 14 is now an official game and the team at the Canadian studio of EA Sports is explaining some of the biggest changes introduced via this year’s installment of the most popular football simulation.

Protect the Ball has been created with Barcelona in mind, with gamers now able to use the player’s body in new ways to make sure that the opposition cannot steal the ball away.

EA Sports says, ”With the ball at their feet, players will be able to step into the opposition and hold them off to maintain possession and make a pass.”

Players who are expecting to receive a pass are also more aggressive and try to find the space they need to then threaten the opposition’s goal.

EA Sports previously also offered details on the Pure Shot feature of FIFA 14.
